Professor Caro, a physiologist and medical doctor with a strong interest in fluid mechanics was a founder of Bioengineering at Imperial College and is a Consultant to Veryan Medical. His findings, which have had global impact, have included recognition that atherosclerosis preferentially affects low wall shear (stagnation) regions in arteries and that arterial curvature and branching is three dimensional, reducing the likelihood of flow stagnation and flow instability and enhancing mixing and blood-wall mass transport. This understanding led to the development of Veryan’s helical centerline stent.
